January 5, 2018: Come Correct

I’m not really a NY resolution kind of girl, because who needs that kind of pressure right after the holidays? But I do tend to lazily mull over some things every early January. Usually, in the process, a few of the moments I’ve lived through in the past year come into sharp focus and alert me: Pay attention to us! You are hanging on to us for a reason! And then it’s on me to sort out the rest for myself.

2017 was a big year for me, rich with moments worthy of consideration and remembering. In November, I had the opportunity to hear a panel of incredible women/athletes, all of whom were about to run the NYC marathon, talk about their individual journeys to/relationships with this particular race. I was totally star struck: Kathrine Switzer was among the women, and so was Robin Arzon. [For those who don’t already know, I’m in deep for Robin Arzon. She, like me, veered all the way off a corporate lawyer path in search of her real life. I think she’s courageous, strong, and very, Very Bada$$.]

Someone had asked Robin about what to wear on race day, because the weather was forecasted to be a little dicey. She instructed everyone to do what they needed to do to be comfortable and dry, yeah, fine, but above all, to dress in a way worthy of the very special occasion that is the 2017 NYC Marathon. And then came the bit with the bang, the bit I just remembered yesterday while making my bed: “You know—you’ve got to come correct.”

Come correct. Do the thing right. With respect, and truth. It applies to busting out on marathon day in sharp and snazzy duds, but also to...everything else. It applies to my fastest mile and my slowest mile. And also to the time and words I share with the people I care about, and also with those I don’t. To the commitments I make. To the food I eat. To the things I read. To this decision. To that goal. Whatever I’m bringing to my day today, I’m going to go ahead and bring it rightly and with respect.

So there, I’ve sorted it. And less than a week into 2018—almost in time to call it a resolution, but I’ll call it a guiding principle instead. Having driven by Island Fitness a hundred times in the last few days, I’m actually contemplating the possibility of a climb up Mt. Rainer this year. (Who’s in?) But right now I find myself in Silverdale, WA with a bunch of errands to do, and trust me, this is going to be the best trip to Trader Joe’s ever.
